Blizzard Opening Suggests Revamp For StarCraft, Diablo 2, And Warcraft 3 On New Battle.Net

November 4, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

This one-two-three punch of classic gaming could bring back older gamers into the fold.

Blizzard has an interesting job opening up today, which suggests they’re going to do a revamp on their classic titles.

The job opening is for a senior software engineer, in a division labeled classic games. The job opening reads like so:

Compelling stories. Intense multiplayer. Endless replayability. Qualities that made StarCraft, Warcraft III, and Diablo II the titans of their day. Evolving operating systems, hardware, and online services have made them more difficult to be experienced by their loyal followers or reaching a new generation.

We’re restoring them to glory, and we need your engineering talents, your passion, and your ability to get tough jobs done.

So if you like wearing many hats, know small teams are the most effective, and look forward to challenges that will create millions of new adventures for our players: we would love to hear from you.

RESPONSIBILITIES

-Make gameplay first again on modern operating systems.

-Create conditions for experiences that look as good as they play.

-Own implementation and curation of features new and old.

-Combat hacking to improve multiplayer.

-Diagnose and fix all the things: crashes, deadlocks, overflows, heap corruptions, etc.

No indication that they are bringing back their entire back catalogue, but of course StarCraft, Diablo 2, And Warcraft 3 are all hugely popular titles, that could enjoy a resurgence in the modern gaming market that’s made GOGcom profitable.

The job description obviously hints at graphical enhancements, and possibly new features, such as achievements, on top of Battle.net online play, which could of course also receive improvements. A perfunctory look at Battle.net reveals that they still sell and maintain the classic versions of these games, using the older Battle.net account system. These revamped versions will likely use the current Battle.net.

Would you personally play revamped versions of StarCraft, Diablo 2, And Warcraft 3? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
