Blizzard Settles Overwatch Lawsuit

November 2, 2015 by Carlos Chism

The case was dropped after months of dispute.

Overwatch developer Innovis Labs and the other Overwatch developer Blizzard Entertainment have settled their dispute over the title both of their games share. Innovis voluntarily dismissed a lawsuit it had originally filed against Blizzard after both companies had reached a settlement. The two companies had originally agreed to share the trademark, until the United States Patent and Trademark Office suspended Blizzard’s claim to the name earlier this year, due to Innovis registering the name first. Innovis then filed an infringement suit against Blizzard a few months later. Last month, a settlement was reached, and Innovis informed the judge handling the case.

This dispute has dragged on for well over a year. Innovis develops the iOS app Overwatch, which is meant to help real-world paintball teams coordinate their movements. The company applied for a trademark seven months before Blizzard Entertainment, who created the first-person shooter that recently went into beta. Expectations were high enough for Blizzard to warn players about fraudulent emails containing beta keys.

While there is no release date set for Blizzard’s new game, the beta is currently ongoing, It is possible that the game could come to consoles sooner than previously thought.
