Payday 2 Steps Back from Microtransactions but Doesn’t Abandon Them

October 21, 2015 by Stephen Daly

Drills will now appears as post-match rewards.

Payday 2 developer Overkill has announced that it is to rollback its controversial microtransaction-driven item drops, while not removing them from the game entirely after a week of community revolt over their inclusion.

Players are beginning to receive safes containing cosmetic items, many of which also come with weapon stat bonuses. The problems relating to the inclusion of microtransactions arose from the fact that when they were introduced the only way to access them was to purchase a drill for $2.49 and previous developer comments in which Overkill said they would never be introduced in the game.

However, in a post published today on the game's Steam forums, the studio announced that drills will now appear as post-match rewards.

It seems Overkill was planning to introduce microtransactions for sometime, but as with Bethesda's disastrous experiment with paid mods for The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, it hasn't taken long to see a reversal.
