Esports might be all the rage these days, but id Software knows better than to embrace a fad for the sake of it. Speaking at QuakeCon, id Software's Marty Stratton said that although competitive gaming will be a big part of the DOOM reboot's multiplayer component, the developers aren't doing it with esports in mind.
"There's tons of moments, even just watching the [multiplayer matches] at Quakecon, where there's very esports moments in it," said Stratton in an interview with GameSpot.
"It really just illustrates how esports can be born out of that. But we're really [working on] how we entertain millions of people on their couches everyday. So that's really been our focus."
Stratton says that the company will reassess the game's potential for esports once it's out.
Support for esports would certainly come in the form of a dedicated spectator mode, shoutcasting features, and a whole lot of balancing. But for now, it looks like id Software will just be focusing their efforts on what matters the most: making DOOM fun to play.
The game is out in 2016 for the PC, Xbox One and PS4.
