Ubisoft has confirmed that the Assassin’s Creed movie has officially entered production.
Ubisoft retains creative control via Ubisoft Motion Pictures Group, but they have taken on New Regency and Fox as producers.
For now, all we know about the project is director Justin Kurzel and actor Michael Fassbender, who will play the title role. The two recently worked together on another film, Macbeth, so production should go smoothly.
Fassbender stated that they would be respectful of the franchise, but will bring new elements into it and perhaps add in new versions of things.
We do know that the game will have an entirely original Assassin who will have a lot in common with previous protagonists, so this may serve as either a welcome expansion of the universe, or something Ubisoft can cleanly disavow without any concerns regarding the franchise’s canon.
It may also be a much needed reputation boost to the name of Assassin’s Creed, something it sorely needs after the release of Assassin’s Creed Unity and the weeks following it, where the team was not able to fix the game’s issues quickly enough to the satisfaction of consumers.
In between, there will be a new game released this holiday as well, Assassin’s Creed Victory.
