Assassin’s Creed Unity Guide: How to Achieve Better Performance on PC

November 11, 2014 by Jacob Saylor

Got graphics problems? This guide will help you run the game a lot better on the PC.

Assassin's Creed: Unity came out today and gamers are already enjoying the lush, vibrant world of the game. While it might not have the same liveliness of Black Flag, it brings its own special environment to the mix. To get the most out of this game graphically, you'll want to optimize your in game settings.

Sorry console users, this guide only applies to the PC crowd.

         1. Turn off Vertical Sync.

The VSync in Assassin's Creed: Unity is extremely demanding and will ofte times damage your frame rate, sometimes as low as 30 frames per second on a good computer. You'll want to use borderless windowed mode and let Windows do the VSync for you. We find it a bit strange that gamers have to go this route, as Ubisoft still does not allow triple buffering in their titles. Allowing this would make games run faster on all rigs.

         2. Turn off or lower the quality of shadows.

If you ever played World of Warcraft, you'll know that turning off shadows in game can result in a huge performance boost. The same holds true in Assassin's Creed: Unity, especially if you can turn off Nvidia's 'PCSS' (Percentage-Closer Soft Shadows).

         3. Turn off anti-aliasing.

Turning off both Temporal and Multi-sample anti-aliasing in your game's graphics options can result in drastically improved performance. We know that these words sound fancy, but there should just be a check box that you can click to turn these features on or off. If you're still running the game using anti-aliasing, you may not even know what your rig is actually capable of.
