Women Play More PC Games and RPGs than Men

Women play more RPGs and PC games than their male counterparts, according to a new study by SuperData Research. 

Joystiq reports that 53.6 per cent of RPG players are women, compared to 46.4 per cent who are male. In addition, women account for 50.2 per cent of all PC game players – that's across all genres and categories.

Men make up the majority of FPS and MMO players (the figure for both is 66 per cent), while 63 per cent of digital console game players are also men.

At 57.8 per cent, women make up the clear majority of mobile game players. The overall gender breakdown was 60 per cent were men while 40 per cent were women. 

All of the figures in the survey relate to gamers in the US, but a survey released last month in the UK showed that 52 per cent of game players in that country are women. An ESA survey for the US market this year stated that 52 per cent of gamers in America are men compared to 48 per cent who are women. 

"Women are closing the gamer gender gap as they represent two out of five MMO gamers," SuperData noted in its report. "Women account for almost half of MMO players, contrary to the stereotyped gamer landscape. Players between 18 and 30 account for 50 percent of the US MMO audience.

"These players represent the largest age group, many of which started playing MMOs as children, during the segment's early years, and have continued into their adulthood. This generation is expected to expand the older markets as they age since they are the first generation to have grown up with MMOs."
