RPGs are fantasy-fulfillment titles by definition and it is for this reason that Dragon Age: Inquisition producer Cameron Lee believes more games should give you the option to pursue same sex romance.
Inquisition includes a number of gay, bisexual, pansexual, and straight characters as well as the option to paly as a man or a woman human, elf, dwarf, or qunari. Speaking to VG24/7, Lee said:
“It’s an important topic. It goes back to fantasy fulfilment. Your fantasies may be different to mine in terms of gender, sexuality, race, class, how you look, all these things. We’re not going to force you to be a fixed character, that you have to be this male guy that runs through the world and looks a certain way, walks a certain way. We even give you choices of voices."
In what may be a dig at Ubisoft, who claimed animating female playable characters in Assassin's Creed Unity wouldn't be possible for technical reasons, Lee added:
“So why picking a gender or sexuality is an issue is beyond me. We have the technology to do it, and we have for a long time, so why not let your fantasy be different?”
BioWare has included same sex romances in past RPGs including Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2, as well as the Mass Effect trilogy. It has however been revealed that some romance options in Inquisition will be blocked according to player race due to story reasons.
Dragon Age: Inquisition is set for release on November 18th in North America and on November 21st in Europe for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
