Mirror’s Edge 2 Will Feature Refined, Expanded Combat

June 24, 2014 by Stephen Daly

DICE’s general manager says ‘there’s so much more to talk about.’

DICE are planning to expand yet refine the combat mechanics for their Mirror's Edge reboot, according to general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson.

Speaking to CVG, Troedsson commented:

"What I can say is that if the last game focussed on first-person movement, it was definitely shown in the movie here that the DICE team will be focussing on first-person combat as well, to really nail and refine that."

The original Mirror's Edge featured hand-to-hand and optional armed combat but players widely panned those aspects of the game. This time round, DICE are looking to make Faith a better fighter and their E3 trailer for the game featured faster takedown moves suggesting combat will have less of an impact of the pace of the reboot.

He added:

"We've shown the combat and movement now, but there's so much more to talk about. What I can say is, this is not just going to be the same game as the last one. We're building Faith for a new generation."

Mirror's Edge was about free-running and movement and it's unclear whether DICE's new direction will take away from that aspect of the new game. EA's Patrick Soderlund has previously remarked that the reboot will be "different" while Frank Gibeau has said that "we have a great story planned" but the original game's writer, Rhianna Pratchett, will not be working on the new game.

Mirror's Edge does not currently have a release date but is coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One "when it's ready".
