Super Smash Bros 4: Sakurai Reveals Gameplay Details In The Lead To E3

May 30, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

We can’t help but wonder how much longer we have to wait for the game’s 3DS release.

Let’s take a look at this week’s batch of new screens from Super Smash Bros, courtesy Masahiro Sakurai on Miiverse.

On Monday, we got to see the revival platforms. As you can see, there are color hints at the bottom of the platforms that let you know when how close you are to being dropped down to the stage.

On Tuesday he revealed the rocket belt, straight out of Pilotwings. With the two small turbines at the back, you are able to fly upward simply by jumping. It’s an ideal Assist for characters with weak recoveries.

On Wednesday we got to see a really weird, but useful, character effect. There’s a new tell for when a character has received heavy damage and is ready to fly out the ring: she or he will start emitting steam around her or him. I imagine this will be more useful in the 3DS version, but I also wonder if this will look jarring or distracting in actual gameplay.

On Thursday, we learn a little extra about Ike, our buff friend straight out ofFire Emblem: Path of Radiance. His Eruption attack can be charged up by holding the button down, but you can’t keep it down indefinitely. You need to let go the moment Ike’s sword shines. Failing to do so means you get hit by the attack’s recoil damage. Actually, a fan shared a funny interpretation of how that would play out.

Finally, Sakurai revealed how they are going to make use of the 3DS’ bottom screen in their pic of the day today. The screen will show all the players, their percentages and status. If you tap on one of the fighter displays, that character gets highlighted on the top screen. This is useful for tracking down a pesky opponent, or for you to keep track of your own character, so you don’t get confused.

Speaking of the 3DS, every day that E3 draws near we lose one day of the supposed summer release for Super Smash Bros on 3DS. How much longer do we have to wait to get the actual release date, not to mention, the release itself? And will we still get daily screens after, for the Wii U version to be released this winter?

We think we’re getting the release dates on the E3 tournament. What do you think? Sound off in the comments below.
