Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2, the excellent remasters of the skate classics, is making the jump to next-generation consoles, as well as the Switch later this year. It’s great that more people will get to play the game, and it’s sure to fit the Switch well, but the path players will have to go in order to upgrade is convoluted and, more importantly, not free.
The move was announced in a little Twitter publicity stunt, with Tony Hawk calling on Crash Bandicoot for help getting his game to next-gen consoles. This, of course, resulted in other brand Twitters — including Nintendo — chiming in with canned messages of “encouragement.” So, long story short, the remasters will be released on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 4 on March 26, and sometime later this year on Switch.
There’s one strange caveat: You cannot upgrade your previous-generation versions of the game for free. Evidently the only way you can get the new version is by upgrading a last-gen game with a $10 “Cross-Gen Deluxe Bundle.” Also, if you want to sync your save data, you’ll have to follow a multi-step process you can read about here (though that’s only if you’re upgrading from PS4 to PS5 — the Xbox upgrade syncs saves automatically).
So just to recap: If you own the standard edition of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 on PS4 or Xbox One (digitally), then you have to pay $10 for the cross-gen upgrade. If you own the Digital Deluxe version, then you get the upgrade for free. If you have a physical PS4 disc, you can pay to upgrade, but you’ll still need the disc. And if you bought the physical Xbox One disc, there’s no way to upgrade to the next-gen version at all. It’s a bizarre system, to say the least.
