PC International Versions of Wolfenstein: New Order Geo-Locked in Germany

May 6, 2014 by Yesika Reyes

Digital and physical copies of the version will be unavailable in Germany and Austria.

Bethesda revealed in a blog post today that the digital and physical international versions of their upcoming game Wolfenstein: The New Order are going to be geo-locked on Microsoft Windows within Germany due to the use of Nazi imagery in the game. However, the regular edition will still be available in the country.

Geo-locking is essentially a method used to select which countries can access content. While there are exemptions in place regarding the use of Nazi content in films within Germany, it unfortunately does not apply to video games. Consequently, Bethesda decided to pursue this course of action for legal and standard industry practice reasons since it too risky to ignore.

"A violation may result in confiscation of the Game, a high financial penalty or up to three years in prison.  Any person involved and/or responsible for such violation may be prosecuted and sentenced, including officers and employees of companies involved," the blog notes.

The international version will also not be available for sale in Austria.  However, the regular edition will still be available in the country."The German language adapted version will be available for sale via select distributors in Germany, Austria and throughout the rest of the world," it noted.

Additionally, we recently revealed that PC system requirements for the game. You can also check out the latest trailer to keep your anticipation at bay.

Wolfenstein: The New Order launches on May 23rd and is also coming to PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One
