#18 Unravel Two
Platform: PC Xbox One PS4 Switch
Release Date: 2018
Steam | PlayStation | Xbox | Nintendo
Unravel was a hit where players took the role of a figure made of yarn. So it wasn’t much of a surprise that a sequel came out. Unravel Two introduces players to two yarny figures. Each has a thread of yarn that must be managed as you go through the different obstacles around the side-scrolling map. The world is full of dangers that require you to use both characters to get through the map. So jump, slide, and swing your way through this game campaign with a friend.
#17 Stardew Valley
Platform: PC Xbox One PS4 Switch
Release Date: 2016
Steam | PlayStation | Xbox | Nintendo
Odds are we don’t have to tell you about Stardew Valley. The game blew up in popularity and is often compared to the Harvest Moon franchise. Here players are trying to build a new farm which requires building the area from scratch. Fortunately, you can go through this game with multiplayer cooperative support. So you and another player can go through the farm build together. This includes tending the crops and livestock and charting new farmland, among other aspects of keeping up with a thriving farm.
#16 As Dusk Falls
Platform: PC Xbox One XSX|S
Release Date: July. 19, 2022
If you’re after a more narrative-driven game, then how about a crime drama? As Dusk Falls is a cinematic story that follows two families intertwined in a robbery gone wrong in 1998. What makes this game great for couples is the fact that choices matter. With the multiplayer component, players can decide on the choices presented in the game. You’ll determine what should happen, and depending on how many players vote on a choice will result in what choice gets played out. Although players will have a set number of overrides within the game, even if your choice doesn’t get picked, you’ll still have the ability to override the decision.
#15 Haven
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
How far would you go for love? In Haven, you play as a couple who have given up everything in order to be together, including leaving their homeworld and going to a forgotten planet just so they can try to live together in peace and happiness. After all, they only need each other for company.
Naturally, things don’t go as planned, but that’s part of the fun. Players will control these characters in both combat and other activities as they attempt to survive from one day to the next. You’ll live together, work together, fight together, and through it all, you’ll grow your relationship. This may is not the game you expected, but it might just be the game you need.
#14 Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
In Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, the long-standing Lego Star Wars saga reaches an inevitable conclusion by having one game cover all nine main movies. Star Wars fans are able to play as numerous characters across the nine main films and are also able to team up with friends to ensure that they get every brick possible!
While it may not be the most challenging game of all time, it has its merits, and engaging in these abbreviated adventures is a ton of fun. They’re simple, they’re addicting, and they’re great for gamers of all ages and skill levels.
#13 Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
PC | Xbox | PlayStation
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands may have started out in the last mainline game as a DLC to test the waters, but it’s now a full-on experience that you’ll definitely want to play with friends–or your loved one.
In this game, you’ll play the Borderlands version of D&D, complete with Tiny Tina as your dungeon master and plenty of monsters for you to kill with blades, magic, and guns. Players can also customize their character like never before, making the game infinitely replayable. This one will be a little tougher for non-gamers, but it’s worth giving a try.
#12 The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes
PC | Xbox | PlayStation
The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes is the latest in the horror anthology series, and this time, you’ll be going to war with not just people, but monsters. At the end of the Iraqi War, a group of soldiers stumble onto a temple that they were never meant to see. Now, they must team up with soldiers from the other side of the war in order to survive, but whether they will or not will be based on your choices.
In addition, how you chose to interact with other characters may determine who lives and dies and whether any of you survive the night. This is the perfect game to play with someone else–playing alone is a little too terrifying.
#11 Team Sonic Racing
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
The kart racing scene has been dominated by Nintendo and their incredibly popular Mario Kart franchise. Each new platform release comes with a new installment for fans to enjoy, but if you don’t own a Nintendo console platform, you’re out of luck. However, that doesn’t mean that alternatives don’t exist. Team Sonic Racing has found plenty of praise, and fans of the blue hedgehog should get ready to have a great time.
You can likely imagine how this game plays out if you’re familiar with other kart racers. Players can choose from a variety of tracks to race on, and scattered around those tracks are different power-ups that can either buff your vehicle or provide an attack ability against other players. The result is a high-speed race mixed with a bit of chaos while players attempt to cross the finish line first.
This game series has several other installments, so if you’d like something that features a little more than just the Sonic the Hedgehog IP, look into Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. However, this game is not available on the Xbox One platform as it was launched for last-generation platforms. With that said, it is backward compatible, so you can still enjoy the game on the Xbox One. It holds up well.
#10 Minecraft
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
You’ve heard of Minecraft. A global phenomenon, endless worlds can be created and explored, making for quite a fun and relaxing gameplay experience. The main focus of this game is to explore and thrive in a world filled with friendly critters, NPCs, and monsters. When you start a game, you’ll need to build, harvest, hunt, and maintain your health along with your hunger. Meanwhile, you’ll have the ability to explore and find great spots to start building up a base.
It’s all about progression, getting a system established to keep resources up, improving your base, and obtaining better tools to make the overall experience a bit more seamless. Of course, if you don’t want to go through the game as a survival experience, there is a creative mode option that gives players the ability to freely create without the fear of losing a life, progression, or precious items. This game does offer the ability to allow up to four players in a local co-op. Online, you can work with up to eight players.
#9 Borderlands 3
PC | Xbox | PlayStation
The Borderlands franchise really kicked off the looter shooter game genre. While the game franchise has been around since 2009, the third mainline installment didn’t come until 2019–but it does offer split-screen local co-op support for two players, and that’s what’s important.
While this may be the third installment, anyone can join the game without playing the previous titles. If you’re interested in an FPS filled with all sorts of loot to grab along with a wacky storyline, don’t overlook this one. There’s a brand new story for players along with new villains and Vault Hunters, so newcomers are welcome to experience what makes this franchise so beloved. Of course, with that said, the past games are still great, and with the art style the developers used, they hold up incredibly well. Borderlands 2 may have a better story, but Borderlands 3 is an absolute blast.
#8 A Way Out
PC | Xbox | PlayStation
A Way Out takes some big cues from the cinematic hit The Shawshank Redemption, which mainly follows a man and his attempt to escape a prison. This particular game is a bit unique as it requires two players to enjoy the campaign. A Way Out follows two men that were incarcerated, and in hopes of escaping, the duo work together to sneak around the prison in order to acquire the different tools required to make a successful escape.
As a result, the display is split into two halves to see where each character is in order to help complete tasks. This could be something as simple as distracting a guard while the secondary player is able to head into an off-limits area. With puzzles that require both players to complete unique tasks to complete a single goal, this game can be quite a hectic and thrilling experience.
#7 Overcooked
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
Overcooked and Overcooked 2 are both fantastic co-op games with the same overall gameplay. In this game, players are working in a different kitchen in each level, some in really wacky locations. As the orders pop up, you’ll need to cook them–easy, right? In order to make the dishes, you’ll have to navigate through a kitchen that is constantly being shifted around through the likes of natural disasters such as earthquakes or being set up in two trucks barreling down the road.
A simple mishap could mean ruining a dish. As the map adjusts, it could leave a certain player being trapped in one section of the kitchen requiring you to rethink your strategy on how to go about making a dish on time and correctly. Will you buckle under the stress of finding the orders too overwhelming to complete on time? Can you chop your lettuce fast enough and get the burger on the plate and served in time?
Get ready to yell at each other. Overcooked is a great measure of what your relationship can stand.
#6 Moving Out
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
Speaking of Overcooked, we have another similar game. It wasn’t made by the same development team, but if you’re familiar with the gameplay style of Overcooked, you’ll see a lot of the same vibes. In this game, players are not cooks but employees of a professional moving company. We’re trading out a kitchen for an entire house as you take jobs moving people’s stuff into a moving truck or other vehicles. This is easier said than done as, again, we’re dealing with some unusual homes with a wide assortment of items, some of which can be fragile, so please handle them with care.
As mentioned, the homes can be a bit unusual, and there will be a range of hazards to watch out for. This could be anything from fires to ghosts. You’ll need to be quick as there’s a time limit, so making risky moves such as throwing an item to another player or working with a group of players to maneuver an odd piece of furniture through narrow corridors and rooms will really test your communication skills.
#5 Rocket League
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
Rocket League was a quick indie hit when it launched. There’s not a lot to talk about here as it throws players into supped up cars on a futuristic soccer field. Using these cars, you’ll have to race down the area to a massive soccer ball and attempt to smash it into the opposing player’s goal. It’s a game that will take players a little bit to figure out the controls and mechanics, but once you got your barrings, this game is an absolute blast. Vehicles in this game feel like they are able to fly through the field, there’s nitro to further expand your speed, not to mention there’s jump feature where you can quite literally blast your car into the air in order to block a shot or assist a player’s hit to ensure the ball makes its way into the goal. Now the game can work on two different levels for players that want to join in together. You could work together as a team or there is a competitive mode where two players can face off against each other. Whatever the case may be, you should find Rocket League to be a blast to enjoy.
#4 Cuphead
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
Cuphead is seeing a resurgence in popularity following the recent Netflix television series. You play as the titular Cuphead while a second player can take control of his brother Mugman as you’re taken through several levels and boss fights to repay your debt to the Devil. The game utilizes an incredible hand-drawn aesthetic and features a soundtrack that will absolutely be remembered for years to come. A new DLC titled The Delicious Last Course was released in June, where you can enjoy a new story–and some challenging new battles–with your buddies. If you’re a fan of boss battles and stress, look no further.
#3 Choose Your Adventure Games
This entry is a bit of a cheat, as it’s tough to choose any one particular game in this large genre. In fact, it really depends on your preferences, as you have a slew of different Telltale Games, Quantic Dreams, and more to choose from. While they are not really multiplayer titles as such, these games feature a more cinematic experience. Players go through each game with a series of QTEs while exploring, solving puzzles, and primarily making choices. These choices will play a crucial role in the game narrative and will adjust the storyline as you progress.
Couples may have fun progressing through the game, getting to a point where they’ll need to make a choice, and talking out the different options before deciding which to choose. These games are also usually available on a variety of platforms, with the majority of the more popular choices available on the Xbox One.
We’d recommend Life is Strange, The Walking Dead from Telltale Games, and Firewatch.
#2 Gang Beasts
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
Gang Beasts is a simplistic and addicting party game. This title puts players into the role of an adorable humanoid character with the goal of beating up the opposing player. Each stage is filled with hazardous obstacles and you’ll need to jump, punch, pick up, and throw your opponent in the hopes that they get knocked out so you can dispose of them in some heinous way. With some wacky physics, visuals, and sound effects, this is one fighting game that everyone can enjoy.
#1 It Takes Two
PC | Xbox | PlayStation
By this point in time, you’ve probably heard of It Takes Two. This game has everything a co-op game should have and more and is the perfect game for couples. Made to be played with two people, the co-op dynamics found in this title will have you working together to solve puzzles and make your way through a chaotic mini-world.
You’ll play as a set of parents who are about to divorce. Their child’s tears over the situation transform you into her toys and you’re sent on a journey to try and turn yourselves back to normal while remembering why you fell in love with each other in the first place. The story is wholesome and the gameplay is addictive, so give it a try!
