Microsoft has announced that 3.9 million Xbox One consoles were sold to retailers during 2013 while 3.5 million Xbox 360s were shipped during the company's second fiscal quarter.
Of these, three million Xbox One systems were purchased by consumers by the end of last year.
In the company's latest earnings report Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer commented:

The tech giant reported revenues for the second quarter of $24.52 billion, which represents a 14 per cent improvement over the same period in 2012. Redmond's operating income also increased to $7.97 billion compared to $7.77 billion the previous year.
Sony announced at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this month that it had sold 4.2 million PlayStation 4 systems to consumers by December 28th, 2013.
Sales forecasts for the Wii U during the current fiscal year were recently slashed to 2.8 million from initial projections of nine million.
