Don’t Expect Paid Microtransactions In Cyberpunk 2077

October 14, 2019 by Dennis Patrick

Expansions will still likely require payments.

When it comes to video game models and trends, there is a big incentive to add DLC after launch for players to purchase. It’s another means to continue to add profits for the development studio and publisher long after the game launched. However, one development studio that may not follow the trend is CD Projekt Red. In the past, we’ve seen the development studio launch a big trilogy, The Witcher, and if you look at the last installment to the franchise there was free DLC but paid expansions that added several hours into an optional game narrative campaign.

Now that the development is moving towards the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, their next big title release, there may be a concern that we will see the title filled with microtransactions. Speaking with GameSpot, John Mamais who is the head of CD Projekt Red’s Krakow Office, spoke about the recent trends in video game microtransactions.

I think it’s a bad idea to do microtransactions after you release a game. It seems like it’s very profitable, though. It’s probably a hard decision for the guy that runs the business to decide if we should do it or not. But if everyone hates it, why would we do something like that and lose the goodwill of our customers?

John Mamais is not a fan of microtransactions being added into the game after launch, but he does find that it could be profitable. With that said, the development studio didn’t offer any paid DLC after launch with The Witcher 3 and instead provided big expansions. It’s a model that will likely follow with the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 though nothing official was stated on the matter yet.

Currently, Cyberpunk 2077 is slated to launch on April 16, 2020, for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One platforms. A Google Stadia platform is also in the works for those who wish to go through the game with a streaming platform.
