The Witcher 3 to Use Flashbacks to Remind Players of What’s Happening

September 30, 2013 by Stephen Daly

‘Event clusters’ will help to avoid repetitiveness.

CD Project Red will use flashbacks and animated storybooks to remind players of what's going on in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, according to Polygon.

The studio are working on numerous, often complex storylines subplots for the open-world RPG which can last up to 100 hours including side-quests and comes with three distinct playable epilogues.

Wild Hunt's gameworld is said to be 35 times the size of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings', and to avoid issues surrounding repetitiveness, pacing, and the over complexity of the open-world, events will sometimes be relayed to the player in flashbacks which will detail the choices they've made to reach that point.

In a bid to overcome repetition the game will also feature "event clusters". These are chains of events which will occur to break up the game's rhythm and tear down objectives. Quests will be divided into different categories as part of event clusters and will includes monster hunting, minigame quests, and others. An animated storybook can also be accessed in-game and will offer an overview of the main storyline up to that point.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is set for release in 2014 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
