Titanfall Will Break Players of Shooter Routines

September 30, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

Respawn Entertainment will need to educate its consumers on why Titanfall can’t be played like everything else.

Titanfall can’t be played like your average, everyday shooter. At least, not if the person holding the controller has any hope of actually being successful. Even though a large portion of the group behind the massively popular Xbox One exclusive came from the Call of Duty team, the mechanics behind Titanfall require players to throw away the common FPS assumptions. Community manager Abbie Heppe explains it all in a new interview with OXM.

"I still watch everybody come in and play it like they're playing a less vertical shooter," Heppe said. "They come in, they hide behind cover, they pop out and shoot a dude, they run for the next cover. When we play we're immediately on the walls and roofs, running around like crazy.

"You have to break people in a bit," she admitted. "And then I see them jump into a wall and they're like 'oh, I just ran along it' – and by the end of the match they're going crazy and playing more like how I would play.”

Gameplay videos and trailers have been released to help break people of their habits, but it will likely take a bit of practice to change something that’s deeply ingrained into the community’s collative mind.

"Even if you tell them, 'No no no, you should do this,’ it takes them doing it themselves to realize that – 'oh, you really can!’” she continued. “Even after seeing the trailers and the gameplay videos we've released, you'd think [people would know], but it's about breaking people out of how they've always been playing."

Titanfall will launch in the first half of 2014.
