Metal Gear Solid 5: Kojima Removing The Shakicam, Changes The Specs

Famed developer also makes a trip to Sony.

Hideo Kojima has been giving fans some small updates on the progress of Metal Gear Solid 5 on Twitter.

 Most notably, he talked about feeling sick from watching the ‘dash’, aka the new sprinting ability, in 30 fps, and has now decided to remove the ‘noise in camera’, aka visual noise, aka the shakicam effect from sprinting. There is a possibility that the effect will remain in next generation versions of the game, where the game can run at 60 fps, but personally, I don’t think it’s a good idea.

The shakicam effect is obviously another affectation meant to make Metal Gear Solid 5 more cinematic. This effect has been around as long as film itself, and Saving Private Ryan is particularly known to have used it to great effect. However, recent films like Cloverfield have been criticized for having overused the technique, to the point that it makes moviegoers queasy. Similarly, Kojima has decided it takes away from the gameplay of this cinematic experience, so it is being removed.

Moving on, Kojima tweeted about difficulties dealing with all the different controller setups between all the different consoles, even alluding to tablets. Subsequently, he no longer plans with particular button layouts in mind. The tablet mention may be reference to companion apps for Metal Gear Solid 5.

Kojima mentioned visiting Sony as well, and making follow up tweets possibly alluding to technology he saw while he was in there. He talked about how he has seen the future he imagined five or so years ago coming true, but now this no longer satisfies him, as he looks forward to what will be possible in the next five years.

Finally, he writes about changing specs and sharing it with his staff. This may mean little more than better optimization, or it may be the most important tweet of this lot. Maybe Kojima can be goaded into sharing more details if you ask him. Feel free to follow and @ him on Twitter.
