Hohokum is Coming to PS3, PS4, and Vita

May 8, 2013 by Jordan Erica Webber

Play as a flying snake-type thing exploring a colourful world.

Sony has been known for its support of indie developers for years, but it seems especially keen to demonstrate that recently. Yesterday, it announced that the PlayStation Store would get an indie game area, and today it has shone a light on three new indie games that are coming to the store: Doki-Doki Universe (which you can find here), Hohokum, and CounterSpy (here).

According to the post on the PlayStation blog Hohokum is a collaboration between an artist called Richard Hogg and a London-based studio called Honeyslug (creators of Frobisher Says!). The game focuses on “playful exploration and creativity”, and is set in a colourful world filled with things to discover. You play as a technicolour snake-like creature that – according to the screenshots – can carry other characters around like a flying carpet.

Hogg makes it clear that this game was supposed to be very different from a lot of the other games out there:

“One of the main aims for Hohokum is to create something where the usual pressures of videogames – constantly being told to do things, fearing failure and being challenged to earn progress – were all absent.”

The game apparently still has Trophies, but it does seem much less focused on specific goals than on just the experience of play. Commenters on the blog post seem excited by just how different this game looks, though some have drawn similarities with games like LocoRoco and Noby Noby Boy. Have you played either of those? Would you play this?
