CounterSpy is Coming to PS3 and Vita

May 8, 2013 by Jordan Erica Webber

Play as a Cold War-era spy.

Sony has been known for its support of indie developers for years, but it seems especially keen to demonstrate that recently. Yesterday, it announced that the PlayStation Store would get an indie game area, and today it has shone a light on three new indie games that are coming to the store: Doki-Doki Universe (which you can find here), Hohokum (here), and CounterSpy.

CounterSpy is the first game from a ten-person team that makes up the studio called Dynamighty, featuring a couple of people who used to work at LucasArts and a guy called Mark Holmes who used to work at Pixar. According to the blog post, it's an action side-scroller for PS3, Vita, and mobile platforms. It also has a really cool aesthetic inspired by themes from things like the Bond movies and the Mission Impossible TV show.

Game-wise, CounterSpy is apparently inspired by the likes of Flashback, Out of this World, Impossible Mission, Metroid, and Shadow Complex. You play as a member of a group called C.O.U.N.T.E.R., and must infiltrate and sabotage the plans of two Cold War-era super powers engrossed in an arms race that threatens humanity. You make use of a variety of weapons, fight through security, sabotage machines, all typical spy activities.

The game will feature some kind of cross-platform play, with “extended gameplay you can get from also downloading and playing on a mobile device”, though the team will discuss that more in future updates. Does the promise of a “social side” to the game appeal to you or turn you off?
