Quantic Dream: PS4 has Limitations, Similar to 2015 PC

April 30, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

It may have its limitations, but Quantic Dream sees the PlayStation 4 as a future PC.

Every single piece of technology will have its limitations. The beauty of smoother textures and a steadier framerate will be difficult to overlook as soon as the next generation of consoles hits the marketplace this holiday, but even Quantic Dream co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumiere admits that the PlayStation 4 will have certain limitations.

The Sony studios visited the Tribeca Film Festival over the weekend to show off a new trailer for its upcoming drama, Beyond: Two Souls. Discussion on the game’s expected 10-hour length and particular story beats was heard at the show, but GameSpot also had the opportunity to talk with de Fondaumiere about the company’s future on the PlayStation 4.

"We are already seeing in the first [PS4 tests] that we're doing a big difference," de Fondaumiere said.

As always, Quantic Dream is doing its best to bring authentic, emotional experiences to the realm of video games. Heavy Rain did its best to mirror reality with its use of facial capture technology, and in many ways, delivered a believable cast of characters. There are big plans for what can be done on Sony’s latest and greatest platform, but even de Fondaumiere understands that certain limitations will prevent his team from pushing gaming to its limits.

“There are limitations on the PlayStation 3 and there will be limitations on PlayStation 4," he said. "With the PlayStation 4, it's something that really is more like the PC of next year or two years."

Even if there is a barrier, a home console with the power of a future PC doesn’t sound like that rough of a deal. For now, though, look forward to the developer’s last PlayStation 3 project, Beyond: Two Souls, Oct. 8.
