If you want to learn more about Journey after seeing it win five awards at the BAFTA Games Awards last night, now is a good time. One of those awards was for “Original Music”, which in this game was composed by Austin Wintory, and Wintory has recently produced an hour-long video that includes the complete score.
The music for this game is absolutely stunning, as is proven by the multiple awards it has won or for which it as at least received nominations, and the fact that the soundtrack for the game made it to the top of iTunes sales charts in eight countries across the world. Journey was even the first game to be nominated for a Grammy for “Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media” – up against films like The Artist and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – and although it didn't win, Wintory says he doesn't mind because the game has already gone beyond his “wildest dreams”.
This video Wintory has put together provides the titles for the different pieces in the score, and accompanies the music with artwork both official and fan-created. You can also read commentary from Wintory, though you'll have to remember to look at the video and not just have it on in the background. It's worth trying to catch some, however, because you'll learn things like that Wintory wrote the theme in a day after one meeting with Jenova Chen (Creative Director), back in 2009 before production on the game had even begun.
