DICE Porting Frostbite 2 Game Engine to Mac

January 28, 2013 by Alex Co

Could some of EA’s future titles be making its way

DICE, developers of the Battlefield franchise, is now hiring to port its Frostbite 2 engine to Mac's OSX.

Frostbite 2, for those who doesn't know, is DICE's in-house game engine that's now being used by a multitude of EA games, as well as for future projects.

In the job ad, it states that the studio is currently putting together a team to bring the engine to Apple's platform, and "deliver an engine as great on OSX as it is on Windows and traditional console platforms."

Just in case you're interested, here are the qualifications needed to be even considered for the role.

Qualifications:

•    Excellent C/C++ knowledge and a passion for programming

•    5+ years of software engineering experience with a focus on OS X

•    Expert knowledge in OS X platform specific details

•    Self-motivated with a strong sense of quality

•    Strong language skills – excellent spoken and written English

To kick things up a notch, DICE also prefers people how has experience in porting Windows applications to OSX, someone with low level programming with a good grasp of memory performance optimization.

Does this mean future Frostbite 2-powered games will make its way onto the Mac platform? That certainly seems to be the case. Although, given how big the platform has become, it's no secret that EA wants to have that market, too.

Upcoming Frostbite 2 games are Visceral's Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel, Command & Conquer, and the most of the Xbox 720 and PS4's upcoming EA-published games.

For reference, previous games made on the engine were Medal of Honor Warfighter, Need for Speed: The Run and of course, DICE's own Battlefield 3.
