Imagine the hilarity that ensued from what seemed like an official Microsoft website linking to the official PlayStation website. A couple of days ago people began to notice the "mistake" and soon everybody was trying it. Crazy stuff, indeed. Well, as is to be expected, this isn't the work of some incompetent Microsoft employee, but of somebody who happened to own the domain and think it was amusing.
He didn't think it would take of like it did and he certainly didn't think he'd offend anybody or be accused of trying to cash in on the jape.
"Xbox720.com has stopped forwarding to the US Playstation 3 site," J.B. of Fusible wrote. "The web address now sends visitors to a different site operated by Jeremiah Germany (the apparent owner of Xbox720.com), in an obvious ploy to get attention for his site. Jeremiah has not responded to a request for comment."
When he eventually did comment, Jeremiah wrote: "Yesterday I was testing the redirect with namecheap. Apparently more than my friends saw the joke; it doesn’t get a lot of hits."
Joystiq later picked up the story, which seems to have brought even more attention to the whole thing. One his own site, Jeremiah wrote: "Good lord, A lot (600+) of people are visiting here from Joystiq because I redirected xbox720.com to the PS3 site a few days back. Backstory: I thought "360" was such a bad name that "720" was comically bad. I spent the $5 and I've parked the domain since +-$5. Sorry we had to meet on false pretenses. Instead, This is a social network tracking site I wrote for myself, it's not pretty but it works"
