Warner Bros. will theoretically continue to make Batman video games forever, according to vice president of product development at Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Ames Kirshen.
Speaking to the PlayStation Blog, Kirshen said, “Batman is one of the cornerstone IPs for Warner Bros. With the Arkham series, we were finally able to realize the full potential of the character.”
Kirshen said that while he nor WBIE have anything to announce at the moment, “the possibilities are endless with a character as dynamic and beloved as Batman.”
This year’s Batman: Arkham Knight was the conclusion to what developer Rocksteady Studios referred to as their trilogy or “the Rocksteady trilogy,” excluding Batman: Arkham Origins, which was developed by WB Montreal, but is still very much an Arkham game.
Kirshen noted that WBIE has had other development studios working on Batman or DC Comics video games such as Nether Realm (Batman: Arkham City Lockdown, Injustice: Gods Among Us) and TT Games (Lego Batman). In fact, TT games just released Lego Dimensions, which features characters from DC Comics, including the Caped Crusader himself.
WBIE wants to continue making Batman games that stick to the core of the character, but also have a new, refreshing take on it.
"You have to understand and respect the core essence of the franchise," Kirshen aid. "But you can't be a slave to every single aspect of its history or continuity in translating it for the gaming medium."
"More importantly, you have to have the talent, vision, and passion from the development teams to make great games and treat them as they would an original IP," he added. "We've been blessed at WBIE with studios and talent such as Rocksteady, NetherRealm, and TT Games."
Recently, in a press release for the upcoming Arkham Knight DLC, it was revealed that the long-delayed PC version of the game will be released “in the coming weeks.”
