Fallout 4 was revealed in early June to the excitement of Fallout fans everywhere.
Today, Bethesda showed off some actual gameplay from Fallout 4, in which they revealed some very cool details about the game, while simultaneously debunking a few silly rumors that were floated on the Internet prior to the event.
We paid close attention to everything that went down during Bethesda's E3 press event and decided to compile them all in one place, so you'll know exactly what you're getting out of Fallout 4.
The character designer lets you fully modify your character's facial features with a system similar to The Sims 4. Pick a facial feature with your mouse or controller and drag it to modify.
Unlike all previous Fallout games and Bethesda titles, Fallout 4's protagonist is fully voiced.
You can choose to play either a male or female character, and the appearance of your infant child is based on how you choose to model your character and their spouse. This runs contrary to the rumor that you can only play a male character in the game.
Over 1000 names were recorded for the main character so other characters can refer to them by their name.
The game is set 200 years after the nukes fell (2077), putting the year the game takes place in as 2277. You play as the sole survivor of Vault 111
The game is built using a next-gen version of the Creation Engine that features physical based rendering, and dynamic volumetric lighting.
There are no loading screens.
You can play the game in classic first person or switch to a dedicated third person mode.
One of the most important characters in the game is the dog you adopt moments after you step out of Vault 111.
You can give the dog commands by pointing at things in the environment – it's all contextual. The dog can grab items in the game world and fetch things for you.
The combat has been overhauled for melee finishers.
Likewise, the VATS aiming system is back, allowing you to slow down or pause time and issue commands to target specific body parts on enemy characters.
Vehicles explode when shot at with explosives, same as they did in Fallout 3.
There are even instances where you can throw down a flare and fly aboard a vertibird, manning a minigun from the side.
There's a new pipboy that you retrieve at the start of the game. It displays a number of new features available in the game's weapon and armor system. There are even little games in the pipboy.
Speaking of which, there's now a layered armor system that allows you to customize parts of the armor you equip, including Power Armor.
The layered armor system is a part of a much larger crafting system that allows you to fully customize your armor and weapons. The crafting system allows you to construct various upgrades for your weapons by breaking down items for components.
There are 50 base weapons, 700 modifications for weapons, which you can modify to your heart's content.
In addition to the crafting system, there is a new building system that allows you to construct a base (or several bases, actually) in the game's world.
To build your base, you must scrap items in the world to reclaim as resources.
The game's fully dynamic game engine allows you to just build environments in real time.
Your settlement will grow allowing you to build power generators, food, and water resources.
The building system has a power system that allows you to run wires that connect to various appliances and utilities.
You can even build terminals to control your appliances, which include defensive turrets.
Your settlements can and will be attacked by raiders, so you'll need to set up traps and turrets to defend your base.
There are many large sites in the game where you can build
You can run brahmin caravans between settlements
The base building system is an entirely optional part of the game, and you don't have to do it if you don't want to.
