We have for you a video comparison between the Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC versions of Thief, developed by Ubisoft Montreal and also available on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.
The video is telling, in that it does not reveal stark differences between the consoles at all. PC has conspicuously better lighting, but perhaps to Ubisoft’s credit, everything else seems to be equal when it comes to these platforms.
Just last week, director Nicolas Cantin confirmed that the game would be 1080p on Playstation 4 and 900p on Xbox One. As many developers do, he also argued that the resolution does not make that much of a difference, and you would really have to look hard to see it. I think you are bound to agree with me that this time, the developers may be telling the truth.
It’s also worth noting that framerate is set at 30 FPS, and the preview shows that all three run smooth, with no technical issues to speak of, at least to the untrained eye.
Now, whether you should buy the game is a different matter entirely, if Metacritic is any indication. Still, it seems Ubisoft Montreal has managed the fine art of parity between PS4 and Xbox One. While some have argued we would have to wait a few years to see this sort of parity, it may be the case that talented engineers, and perhaps some lower standards (sticking to 30 FPS) can allow developers to reach parity now. Whether they want to or not, well, that’s a different matter entirely.
