Movies based on games have a bad reputation, no doubt. Often they struggle to even get off the ground as the production companies pass the movies off from screenwriter to screenwriter, producer to producer hoping to nail the winning combination. Likewise, Gears of War has been "in development" for the past five years, and has gone through at least three scriptwriters and a couple of producers.
But right now Creative Artists Agency, representing Epic Games, are looking for new ones. Variety reports that the CAA is eager to meet with producers in the coming weeks and set the project up elsewhere, since New Line has decided to focus on The Hobbit films instead.
Epic is expected to consult on the Gears of Wars movie to make sure it's all up to par with the canon, so fans should at least not have to worry about that. Despite lead designer CliffyB announcing his departure last week after 20 years, everything to do with Gears seems good to go. The next game in the series, Gears of War: Judgment is set to release in 2013. Now we just have to wait and see if the movie will be yet another disappointing video game movie or one that breaks the mold.
