Shovel Knight Dev Discusses Porting Game to the Switch

March 15, 2017 by Kris Kittie

Shovel Knight director Sean Velasco shares his thoughts.

Shovel Knight has become one of the most popular indie games around, and earlier this month the game was released for Nintendo Switch. Its director, Sean Velasco shared his thoughts on the porting of the game with Game Rant.

“It was not too bad!” said Velasco. “Every platform has its challenges, especially prepping a game for launch! Everyone is figuring it all out for the first time, so there are definitely some bumps in the road. But Nintendo was really helpful and accommodating along the way.”

Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove was the launch title for the Switch, alongside the most recent spin-off campaign released for the game, Specter of Torment. The Switch port is currently the only portable version of the game that has multiplayer support, which was omitted from its 3DS and PS Vita versions.

“It’s incredibly awesome to just grab your console and take it on the go with no hassle,” answered Velasco when asked about the advantages of Nintendo’s new hardware. “Having two Joycons attached is also really cool- now you can bring cooperative Shovel Knight wherever you go!”

Velasco also hopes that the capabilities of the Switch will allow the console to reach a wider audience than its predecessor, the Wii U. “Maybe the Switch will get cool ports of some of the games that people missed on the Wii U.”
