Former Rare Staff Wants to Create Banjo-Tooie Successor

September 26, 2012 by Jeanine Celestin-Greer

Could it be created with Unity and Kickstarter?

With Obsidian's incredible success at raising money for their old-school RPG on Kickstarter, it's no surprise other developers are thinking about using it to get their games made. Two ex-developers from Rare created a twitter account back in early September stating "Let's make the spiritual successor to Banjo-Tooie! Core members of the original team are ready to go. All we need is your support. So join us today!"

While a sequel to Banjo-Tooie might be more preferable, Rare still owns the rights to the license as evidenced by their recent remake Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. There was a rumor this past summer however, about Nintendo possibly trying to acquire the rights.

"So, what is this twitter thing all about?", the twitter account said. "Right. Firstly, it is to test the waters really, about whether anyone would even think making a game that shares that same kind of humour, silly characters, fun game play, great tunes and all that stuff that we enjoy making."

About a week after the account made its first tweet, they noted Obsidian's success with Kickstarter, linking to an article about it and saying "If this is anything to go by, then maybe Kickstarter is the way to go for our game??"

They also mentioned interest in the Unity engine, stating “Unity will probably be perfect for our spiritual successor. I'm thinking keeping level of detail and googly eyes close to the original …""

You can keep an eye on their twitter here. Would you be interested in a third Banjo game of sorts?
