The Last Of Us TGS Trailer Arises

September 21, 2012 by Patricia Hernandez

This game looks so. Good.

I'm buying a PS3 specifically so I can play the Last of Us this December…and watching this trailer, I only feel more resolve in that decision! Hailing from TGS comes a beautifully rendered video where we see Ellie staying back with a knife while Joel kicks the shit out of a guy, eventually killing him.

We've seen this before from a different angle, but this emphasizes the roles Ellie and Joel pick up in the hope for survival. She goes in to search the body after Joel is done and will likely be able to offer some support with her knife should it come to that.

We also catch a glimpse of the zombies/not-zombies (…fungus people?) and boy, they seem fast…and feral. Instantly they go after the bodies that Joel left behind–as if they could tell, damn vultures. Ellie stabs the fungus-thing repeatedly, but Joel then goes on to shoot the thing, making it seem as if this will follow the old "got to shoot them in the head" trophe. Makes sense from a gameplay perspective since that means we can have headshots, but if they actually do this, I feel like it would be a tad disappointing. They're fungus people! Can't they have something special about how we kill them or are these really just reskinned zombies?

Ellie then talks about their survival routine and we can see the streets of the city they're in. Ellie muses about how things must've been nice before whatever happened in this world (outbreak?) Remember, she was born after the fact, and that's sure to make an interesting contrast between Joel and her. If Clementine and Lee are any indication in The Walking Dead, the exploration of that type of relationship is bound to be good–that and, Naughty Dog is fantastic when it comes to writing engaging characters.
