If you haven't heard of the Puppeteer yet, you're in luck. Developer SCEE has just released a trailer for the dark fairy tale that reveals a bit more of the story. The game focuses on a young boy named Kutaro who's soul is stolen by the evil Moon Bear king in order to turn him into a slave. Kutaro is subsequently changed into a puppet and has to escape the magical castle through a variety of different landscapes and fight many different enemies all using a pair of scissors – oh yeah, and he somehow finds a giant flying, talking cat to help him out too.
When I saw the trailer, all I could think of is "Tim Burton" and I'm sure that the game will be constantly compared to Burton's work. The art style follows a very "Puppet-like style"- think Kirby's Epic Yarn meets Burton – but the gameplay the trailer shows gives the appearance of a world without rules that can change in an instant. There is a Witch that seems to assist Kutaro in his journey, but like the stereotype of a Witch her motives seem unclear and it's hard to tell if she is completely on Kutaro's side.
Interestingly, all of the voices in the trailer aside from the Narrator are done by Art Director Gavin Moore, for which he apologizes for as SCEE is currently casting in London. Moore, however, says that he is thinking about doing the Witch's voice permanently and is asking for your assistance in making the decision on EU PlayStation blog. I personally think he did a great job with all of the voices and think this is shaping up to be a fun game. Watch the trailer below and tell us what you think!
