The developers of Diablo 3 have always been open with the public—and the press—about their development of the game. Designers Jay Wilson and Wyatt Cheng spilled the beans on the upcoming patch 1.0.5 which is set to add a new endgame feature called the Infernal Machine, an event only available in the game’s Inferno difficulty mode.
The so-called Infernal Machine is an event which takes place only in Inferno mode, available to players that are level 60 and “above” with Paragon levels. This new end-game quest is designed to extend the length of Diablo 3 and rewards high level players with a variety of challenges involving “uber” versions of the game’s deadliest boss monsters.
To unlock the Infernal Machine quest, players must acquire ingredients from all four acts of the game, the process of which is expected to be more arduous than collecting items to craft the Staff of Herding, which is used to unlock the Whimsyshire secret level.
The Infernal Machine will come in its own set of levels, replete with unique architecture and designs, while featuring palette-shifted and special effects-laden versions of existing bosses in the game.
Players who kill these boss monsters and complete the difficult quest have the chance to receive a new Legendary ring that’s available only through the quest. The item will be bound to your account, so you’ll be able to swap it between each of your characters, though you’ll be unable to trade it or give it to anyone else.
The Infernal Machine content will be released as a part of Patch 1.0.5, which is due for release in a few weeks.
Diablo 3 is currently available on the PC and Mac.
