Under a month ago, the mega-popular Arma 2 mod DayZ had around 500,000 players. Now, the count is, according to the official site, around 1,003,491 unique players—and that's after being out for only four months.
The zombie-themed survival-oriented game, which is to be released as a standalone sometime this year (perhaps even before Christmas), has been called "the best zombie videogame ever made" on more than one occasion, with praised lavished on its open-world environment and focus on resource scarcity, complicated social dynamics and exploration.
And, fortunately for both the makers of DayZ and the original Arma 2, the game is clearly doing as well with fans as it is with critics. The success of DayZ has even increased sales significantly for its three-year-old parent game—with sales of Arma 2 up 500 per cent—making it soar to the top of the Steam sales charts.
