David Cage has big plans for his upcoming game, Beyond: Two Souls. The creator of Heavy Rain and Fahrenheit says that his aim with Beyond is to ‘“create something different” from anything that’s been done before in a game.
"My goal is to surprise people, to give them something they want without knowing they want it," he said in an interview with Edge. "I want to create an emotional journey, a unique experience.
"I am not interested in giving them 'fun', I want to give them meaning; I don't want to challenge their thumbs, I want to challenge their minds."
Cage explained that the conception of Beyond came from the death of a close relative, and he intends to create that feeling of attachment—and presumably loss—for the game’s protagonist, Jodie Holmes. The game will follow Holmes’ story for over 15 years.
"Maybe this is irrelevant or just overly ambitious," said Holmes. "Maybe this is not what most people out there actually want. But this is the goal I set myself with Beyond: to create something different."
Jodie Holmes is being portrayed by Academy Award nominee Ellen Page.
