DICE: Mobile Gaming is Not a Threat to Consoles

July 2, 2012 by Alex Co

DICE GM Karl Magnus Troedsson doesn’t think mobile gaming will kill of traditional gaming. On the contrary it can work for it.

Mobile gaming has seen a drastic increase in the last few years, from people playing "Snake" in their old mobile phones, we now have full-fledged franchise spin-offs releasing almost day-and-date as its big brother counterparts.

So, are doombringers correct in their thinking that mobile/tablet gaming will eventually make console gaming the way of the Dodo?

If DICE (Battlefield 3) General Manager Karl Magnus Troedsson is to be believed, mobile gaming is not a threat to consoles. In an interview with EDGE, Troedsson offers the idea that while the mobile gaming market is growing, that doesn't mean console gaming will be going away anytime soon.

People are generally correct that things are changing, and a lot of people in this industry are acknowledging that – some people don't want to see it, though…But I would also say the people who are painting such a grim picture of where we're going are wrong.

On the contrary, he thinks the widening of gaming's reach will be beneficial for the game's industry as a whole…that, and the "hi-def" experience will always have a place among gamers.

Yes, people are playing more on their mobile devices, but I don't see people playing on other SKUs as a problem for triple-A developers, it's actually the contrary. I think people engaging in any kind of gaming is good for all games, because it means that people will play more.

There will always be a demand for games that require a lot of hardware to deliver a really hi-def experience…Whether that will be delivered by CPUs and memory sitting in your room, or somewhere else, I don't know. Probably both. But one thing is for sure, people will continue to want to play the best-looking games out there.

While naysayers might look at his comments and be a skeptic — he is, after all, the boss of one of the world's largest gaming studios, Troedsson might have a point though.

Unless mobile gaming can somehow replicate what we can play at home both visually and from a user interface too, then I don't see "core" gamers giving up their controllers and keyboards to play on their tablets for those "big" franchises.

Do you think mobile gaming will somehoe make console/PC gaming obsolete in the near future? Is this an idea you relish or dread?
