Just after announcing Wasteland 3, InXile has released a new teaser video of another game it’s currently developing: The Bard’s Tale IV. Here’s what they wrote:
The Bard’s Tale 4 returns to the classic fantasy RPGs of years past. Featuring dynamic turn-based combat, a full party of characters to build and customise, and first-person exploration of maze-like dungeons with devious puzzles and riddles, The Bard’s Tale IV is a true successor to the original Bard’s Tale trilogy, and is crowdfunded by thousands of fans. Help us bring back the dungeon crawl and return to Skara Brae – the city that started it all.
The game’s Kickstarter was a success, earning well over its stated goal of $1.25 million. Designed as a sequel to The Bard’s Tale trilogy, which was originally developed at Interplay, a publisher that InXile founder Brian Fargo once led way back in the day.
The new title is set to be a return to the land of Gaelic-flavored land of Skara Brae for more dungeon crawling action. When the game was first revealed, Kickstarter backers got to have a small taste of the game. The new teaser trailer shows off one of its monsters as well as the game’s seemingly open world environment.
InXile used photogrammetry in Scotland to create lifelike in-game architecture based on their real world counterparts. The result is, in a word, impressive.
I interviewed Brian Fargo last year to talk about the upcoming game, what players can expect from it, and the changing landscape of crowdfunding.
Disclosure: I contributed to the Kickstarter.
