For fans of a singular series, Final Fantasy ethusiasts are a people divided. The argument has raged from classroom to break room, with fans adamantly proposing why they think a specific Final Fantasy is better than the rest.
Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada is weighing in on the argument, but not in the way you'd assume. At the company's annual shareholder's briefing (transcription available here), the question was posed to Wada about when they could expect a Final Fantasy VII remake. He responded by essentially saying that Square Enix will make a Final Fantasy VII remake once they have made a Final Fantasy that exceeds the quality of VII.
Wada said if they were to release a remake of VII right now, the Final Fantasy franchise would be done with.
It's a bold statement, especially from Wada. It tosses the majority of Final Fantasy titles into the bin as wasted efforts, which really isn't fair to the rest of the franchise. If the goal is to always be better than your last game, Wada is painting the last nine series installments as failed experiments.
So fans will have to sit back and wait, not-so-silently judging every future Final Fantasy release, wondering if the time for nostalgic indulgence has arrived.
