I think it's hard to argue that one of the constants when it comes to single player games are boss fights. Yesiree, there's quite nothing like slaying hordes of nameless grunts to take out that particular level's bad-ass boss, right?
It seems the folks over at Arkane Studios — the development team behind Dishonored — is not a believer in this game mechanic staple. As they've revealed that Dishonored won't have boss fights…at all.
Speaking to Kotaku, lead designer Ricardo Bare reveals this detail stating, "We don't really have boss fights in the traditional sense…You won't go into any foreboding rooms where the doors suddenly seal and the music suddenly changes and all of a sudden the gameplay mechanics are drastically different. You're just bringing down corrupt noblemen one by one in an attempt to clear your character's name."
While boss fights are normally used to give a game's chapter an "end" and to break up the monotony, Dishonored's varied gameplay might be able to pull this off. Of course, the game also allows players to tackle objectives in different ways, so there's that, too.
Dishonored will be out on October 9 for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
Have you played a lot of single player games where there were no boss fights? What did you make of it? Do you think Dishonored can pull it off?
