Unreal Engine 4 was demoed a few days ago at E3 for the very first time, and if you’re like most gamers, you might be throwing dollars at Epic shouting “SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY.” Luckily for all of us, in an interview with Joystiq, Epic Games Vice President Mark Rein revealed that the first title utilizing the amazing UE4 will be shipping in 2013.
When asked directly about the first shipped title, Rein responded, “For sure something next year, I just don’t know exactly when.”
Elaborating on the lack of a set date, he explained, ”Until we’re really clear on when the game is going to be finished, when the partner wants to put in the sand and market it, we don’t really have those kind of dates.”
Rein went on to discuss the importance of flagship titles with the launch of UE4..
“It’s certainly important for us to have our flagship game. That’s the game for which we develop the engine. Gears of War was the game for which Unreal Engine 3 was developed, and so shipping that has a huge significance for licensees and for us. I think, for Unreal Engine 4, there’ll certainly be a couple of games.”
Amidst a year of delays, canceled projects, and broken promises, the mere whisper of an early release date on something as large as a new engine is enough to send gamers into a spiral of excitement.
