Free Radical’s co-founder Steve Ellis thinks that shooters are not profitable unless you are flying the flag of either Call of Duty or Battlefield. It is well known in this industry that these two franchises are powerhouses, but such dreary dialogue coming from such a renowned name is somewhat perturbing.
“Nobody really buys any FPSes unless they’re called Call of Duty,” Ellis said to Edge.
“I guess Battlefield did okay, but aside from that pretty much every FPS loses money.”
Ellis noted that in 2008, he tried to get a number of developers to sign on for funding Free Radical’s development of Timesplitters 4.
“I spent the whole of 2008 going round talking to publishers trying to sign up Timesplitters 4,” he said.
He also discussed the unwillingness shown lately from publishers to break away from the mainstream.
Free Radical was picked up by Crytek awhile back, due to financial failings.
