Blur Dev: Racing Games Need a New Generation of Consoles

May 1, 2012 by Jacob Saylor

VROOM!

Racing games have come a long way this generation. Whether it is the arcade-style of Motorstorm or the simulations of Gran Turismo, the genre has grown leaps and bounds since the oncoming of this seventh console generation.

However, former Bizarre Creations design manager Gareth Wilson is coming from a different angle. He thinks that for games to move any further in the racing genre, we need to move on to the next generation of consoles.

“Racing games always do well when a new console comes out, and you do a new physics engine and improved graphics, but towards the end of a console cycle it’s always quite hard to push racing games,” said the disgruntled developer.

While the same could be said for nearly all video game genres, he noted that to achieve more positive feedback from fans, they would need the technology jump that comes with new consoles.

“So with the next hardware we should be able to create features with another level of immersion and quality. There’s stuff we can do with this generation that we couldn’t before, and with the next we can make everything that bit more awesome. Racing games need that,” he said.

With E3 coming up in June, the eighth set of consoles could be on our doorstep. Are you prepared for the next-gen? Let us know in the comments section below!
