While Crysis 2 was the direct sequel to Crysis 1, the game moved away from the first title's openendedness with its narrow environments and linear mission progression.
Speaking on Twitter, Crytek head Cevat Yerli said that Crysis 3 will be "more of a spiritual successor in gameplay to Crysis 1 instead of Crysis 2."
He also added that the PC version of Crysis 3 will be ahead of its counterparts on the console, although the game is expected to "push the 360, PS3 to its limits." In a separate tweet, Crytek's Tiago Sousa confirmed enhanced graphics for the PC version of Crysis 3, which will support SMAA with all modes, TXAA, MSAA, and "something new".
Crysis 3 will see the return of the second game's protagonist Prophet, who travels to a changed New York City overrun by nature and split into seven distinct biomes. The game will be released next year.
