When you hear that a party game caused a man to flip out and get violent, the first games that come to mind are popular friendship destroying titles such as Mario Party or even Monopoly — but a card game? I was surprised, too.
A group of friends in River Falls, Wisconsin, were playing Cards Against Humanity, an antagonistic and politically incorrect card game that found a fair amount of popularity at PAX East this weekend. It was when a joke about paedophilia was made that one of the friends went “bonkers,” which in turn sent the rest of the players into hiding.
“Someone apparently joked about child molestation. A 38-year-old Plum City man erupted angrily, allegedly scattering the cards, breaking a beer bottle, a lamp, throwing a chair and later smashing a wine bottle.” The River Falls journal reports. “Some of the card players raced to a bedroom, locked the door and called 911. River Falls police responded.”
“The suspect, described as drunk, was found alone in the kitchen. He was persuaded to come outside.”
After Police intervention, the man reportedly became uncooperative, drunkenly using a phone in the police station to call a county judge. Eventually he made his way back to the house where the game took place to retrieve his belongings.
Cards Against Humanity is touted as a “party game for terrible people,” which is like an offensive Apples to Apples. While it seems as fun as an episode of South Park, it could be a recipe for disaster around the wrong people, as demonstrated by our friends in River Falls.
