Development studio Obsidian Entertainment has pledged their loyalty to inXile Entertainment – but not without demand. Obsidian wants the Wasteland 2 Kickstarter to reach $2.1 million before making any promises.
With a new life flowing through the veins of Kickstarter’s community – thanks to Double Fine – this is a more than manageable task. The Kickstarter for Wasteland 2 has produced over $1 million in the past twenty-four hours, and there is still a whopping seventeen days left for the project to be funded.
Brian Fargo, the man behind Wasteland’s revival, spoke on his relationship with Obsidian.
“I have a history with the guys at Obsidian that dates back to the days of Interplay's Black Isle studios," he said, “Together we created some of the greatest RPG's of all time, from Fallout 1 & 2 to titles like Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment. It is great that we now have a chance to reunite on a project like Wasteland 2.”
Obsidian has recently been seeing problems financially, laying off staff members here and there while work continues on their upcoming South Park Game.
Could this be a new era in the gaming industry – the Kickstarter era? It seems to be turning into a sort of public market, especially in this instance.
