Indie world-builder Minecraft has finally surpassed five million paid downloads. The game has raked in $80 million dollars since it was released on October of 2010.
They've also made another million from merchandise, and the Chief Executive of Mojang has been approached by Hollywood about doing a Minecraft TV show.
After being asked about the potential TV show, he said "We've been approached by a number of high-profile Hollywood producers and asked to do TV shows. We may do that. It's hard when you don't have any experience and someone comes to throw these ideas around. "
"We have so much to focus on with just the game development and growing the business. But if the right idea comes along and the right people that we'd want to work with, we'd say, 'why not?'"
As a huge Minecraft fan, I have to protest here. A TV show based on Minecraft? What would that even look like? I assume it would stick as close to the game as the upcoming Battleship film, which looks terrible. Anyone else disappointed with the Hollywood strategy of 'hear about something popular, try to make a TV/movie out of it, even when it makes NO SENSE?'
Maybe it's just me.
