When a leaked Star Wars Battlefront III build came out in January 2016, Frontwire Studios decided to remake the game as Galaxy in Turmoil. On their website yesterday, a blog post was happy to announce that the development team was able to move forward with their project, with a Steam distribution deal with Valve. The game itself will be published for free.
“It is with great pleasure that as of today I am able to officially announce that Frontwire Studios has officially signed a distribution deal with Steam/Valve for the game Galaxy in Turmoil. After ongoing discussion between Valve Representatives and myself, Valve/Steam has agreed to ship Galaxy in Turmoil to it’s millions of users for FREE.”
There were concerns that the use of Star Wars IP would have an effect on the project, but given the tone of this blog post those concerns seemed to be avoided. Valve seemed to lack the same worries about a Disney cease and desist that the team itself was stressed about. They reemphasized their community driven focus, with the game’s purpose being to give fans of the old school Battlefront games a chance to experience the unreleased third game in the series.

The story of Galaxy in Turmoil began after the leaker known as ProtoFaggot released the build back in January of this year. “After a lot of work I managed to get my hands on Star Wars Battlefront III and wanted to share the infamous canceled game that I’m sure many of you wanted to play,” he said at the time. “I know not everyone will get the chance to play this immediately, but over time I expect the modding community to be able to change that.”
Frontwire Studios came forward and decided to give it a go, leading to the project you see today.
