One of the reasons that the world isn’t in the best of places right now is that the cost of living is higher than ever. Between house/rent payments, gasoline prices, inflation on food, and so on, people are struggling to have a little extra money to use on the “little things” that’ll make them happy and get them through the week. Video games are an example of things that many people buy to destress, but in recent times, the price of those has been increasing, making some worried about what will come next. GTA 6 is not immune to this, as one of its biggest controversies has to do with its potential pricing.
We’ve all heard the rumors at this point, with people clamoring about “how much the game should actually cost” and what others in the field think it should be. The big controversy surrounding the price is that this could be the first $100 game, not including special editions, deluxe editions, and things of that nature, of course. Last month, a voice actor from one of Rockstar Games’ past titles said he understood why it might cost that much, and on Reddit, someone found that interview and asked:
“If the game is truly good and deserves it, the hard work will pay off through sales. Just like GTA 5 sold 200 million copies and RDR2 sold 80million.
So why make the absurd claim that it deserves a 100 dollar price tag when you haven’t even played a single minute of it? It feels like people are trying to pressure Rockstar into raising the price and starting a new era of inflated game pricing that other studios could follow without backlash. If Rockstar sets a trend of selling a standard edition for 100 USD, all AAA slops will likely follow. It’s a slippery slope that must be resisted at all costs.”
While we will admit that it likely will be a “slippery slope” if the game goes to $100 at launch, it’s not necessarily fair to think that all other game developers and publishers will immediately do that price, too. Some groups this year have released surprisingly large games at much lower prices, and that shows that not everyone is going for the “big price point” metric.
Naturally, many on Reddit had thoughts on this, including that it “totally won’t be $100” at launch, while others think that this is a “mind game” by Rockstar so that gamers will be grateful when it’s only $80, and some don’t even think it should go above $70!
The debate will continue until the price point for GTA 6 is confirmed.
