There are certain statements that you hear at times in the world where your first reaction is likely nothing short of, “Well, duh!” As in, the statement you hear is so obvious that no other response is necessary. In the gaming space, you often get that kind of response when a certain franchise title does really well, and you KNOW that the developer/publisher will make a sequel. You can also say that when a game is so controversial or does so poorly, the dev team won’t make a follow-up. That brings us to Star Wars Battlefront 3, a game and a name that has a “lot going on with it.”
Here’s a very brief history lesson for you. The franchise started out in the PS2 era when the beloved movie franchise was doing its “Prequel Era.” The first two games were massive hits, and there was supposed to be a third one, until it got canceled. However, years later, Electronic Arts got to bring the franchise back, and they put DICE on the game to ensure it looked as beautiful as possible.
While the two games they made were visually stunning at points, they also lacked some of the polish and fun that the previous games had. To that end, the second entry from DICE’s run was infamous for its microtransactions, to the point that the game was straight-up “pay-2-win,” and even the United States Congress got involved to make the game tone down what it was doing. When you add that to its own gameplay woes, you can see why Star Wars Battlefront 3 was likely “never an option” for Electronic Arts.
Enter Reddit, where the producer of the last two games, Mats Holm, answered as many fan questions as he could about the game and why a third one wasn’t happening. One thing he noted was that while the 2nd entry has been getting a big boost in players due to various outside events, the team that made the game isn’t actually together anymore and, thus, couldn’t complete the trilogy:
“We spread all over. A few went to Ubisoft, some went independent, some to King, Avalanche, Star Stables, Paradox, Starbreeze, Mojang to name a few. Some left Stockholm to join game companies abroad as well. Embark has a lot of the people who made base game, but the people who made the live game did not leave in a pack. We all slowly drifted after being put on Battlefield.”
Holm even said that just throwing a new team together to make the third game is something to be “skeptical” of.
