It’s always unfortunate to report on another studio experiencing a new round of layoffs. That’s been the norm lately as we watch more studios dial back and begin restructuring. However, we have to report again on another round of layoffs in the industry. This time, it looks like Striking Distance Studios is the latest group affected by the layoff trend. Here’s what we know so far.
The news comes from the folks over at 80.lv, which focuses on a post from Jesse Lee. For those unaware, Jesse was the studio’s concept art director. In his post online, Jesse revealed that most of the developers at Striking Distance Studios were laid off. While he was proud of the work they did while working with the studio, they are now once again looking to find work.
Of course, there’s no official word quite yet on how many employees were recently booted from the studio. Likewise, we’re uncertain what the future will hold for Striking Distance Studios. These were the folks that first brought out The Callisto Protocol. That game didn’t hit the numbers most hoped for at launch. However, their follow-up title might have fallen even further behind, that being last year’s action roguelike shooter [REDACTED].
While there were some murmurings that the studio was working through a new game, it’s been a mystery what the game will entail. Now that there are apparently far fewer developers actively working at Striking Distance Studios, we’re not sure if the future of this project is also in jeopardy.
For now, we’ll have to wait for an official statement regarding the studio’s future and current project. Meanwhile, we’re hopeful that those affected by the recent layoffs will be able to bounce back quickly. In the meantime, if you haven’t tried out their big title release, The Callisto Protocol, you’ll be able to find our Before You Buy coverage video on the game in the video embedded below.
